How do I become an American citizen?
To become a U.S. citizen, you must meet certain eligibility requirements, including:
- being at least 18 years old,
- being a legal permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen),
- and having good moral character.
- You will also need to pass an English and civics test.
The next step is to file Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization. This form can be filed online or by mail with the USCIS.
Once your application is received, you will be scheduled for a biometrics appointment, where your photo, fingerprints, and signature will be taken.
After that you will be scheduled for an interview with a USCIS officer. During this interview, you will be asked questions about your background and application.
You will be required to take the citizenship test, which includes questions about U.S. government, history, and civics.
The USCIS officer will then make a decision on your application. If your application is approved, you will be scheduled for a ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance and become a U.S. citizen.
The process of becoming an American citizen can take several months or years, depending on the backlog of applications and the complexity of your case.
